Welcome to Grade 4! Grade 4 is a bit of a transition year because it's the first year of being an intermediate student. The Grade 4 classroom strives to build a community of independent, responsible, and compassionate students. The Grade 4 curriculum is designed to help students grow as learners and explore areas of interest to them. In Grade 4 this year, students will engage in inquiry and project-based opportunities.
Christian Education: Over the course of the school year students will continue to build their relationship with God by learning more about the 10 Commandments, Beatitudes, Jesus' Parables and miracles, and the importance of the Liturgical year. Additionally, they will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of prayer, Advent, and Lent.
Language Arts: Students will continue to develop their paragraph writing skills and learn the steps to writing a 5-paragraph narrative. Students will also continue to work on grammar skills and build their vocabulary! Students will also begin to learn how to properly research a topic, show their understanding and produce a final product across other subjects. Students are expected to read for 25 minutes each night, while working on reading comprehension skills taught in class.
Math: Students will be continuing to use the JUMP Math program, where the concepts are isolated and described very clearly and incrementally so everyone can understand. Some of the topics covered this year are multi-step addition and subtraction word problems, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, and further understanding of money and telling time.
Social Studies: Grade 4 Social Studies focuses primarily on British Columbia. This year we will cover topics such as: Indigenous Groups across B.C., early explorers to B.C. and their impact on present day Canada, the Fur Trade, the Gold Rush, how B.C. became part of Canada, and the impact of residential schools on Indigenous groups of Canada. Grade 4 ends the school year with a hands-on field trip to Fort Langley!
Science: Grade 4 Science includes science experiments and many project-based learning experiences. We will cover topics such as matter, energy, biomes and animal adaptations and the phases of the moon.
